Video & Data Projectors

Video projectors or LCD projectors are by far the easiest way to display video or computer images to a large audience. Designed primarily for boardroom presentations their bulk production has brought the price down and, with increases in technology, high quality images are now available to the masses.

Designed to work in most situations, projectors can be used for front or rear projection from a stand or ceiling mount. They are available with up to 2 computer inputs, composite and s-video inputs.

An important feature of projectors is Keystone correction. This process is able to eliminate the trapezoidal image which occurs when the screen is either above or below the projector. Different processes involve moving the internal LCD panel, re-mapping the pixels or shifting the lens. However poor quality projectors leave the edge of the image looking jagged and sometimes even remove part of the picture in order to achieve this task.

The brightness of projectors is measured in Lumens. 1000 Lumens is the rough starting point although dimmer alternatives are available in lightweight models. Brightness ranges up to 5000 or 6000 Lumens but around 2000 Lumens is currently the top of the mass produced, and therefore affordable, projectors. Bulbs are usually given a lifetime time rating over which the light and colour output should be consistent. With a typical life of 2000 hours a replacement bulb is not a issue for many users and once cooled down the units can be transported without damage to the bulb.

We have recently conducted our own tests on projectors from all the major manufacturers looking at quality of the image, features, functionality and price. The manufacturer which came out on top was NEC and this is why we are happy to recommend their products. In fact our own hire and demonstration kit consists solely of NEC projectors. The consistency of picture quality provided by the NEC range is very high. Some of the other models which we looked at were able to provide good data images but their refresh rate was not fast enough to give jerk-free video pictures. As well as this NEC have a patented method of ensuring that keystone correction is crisp and clear to cope with even the most awkard of angles.
